SCHOLARSHIPS

In 1987, the Sunfield Area Sponsors of Programs for Youth (SPY’s)  began awarding  scholarships to deserving high school  seniors. To date, over $300,000 has been given in scholarships and recognition awards. Scholarship application packets are available online at www.sunfieldareaspys.com.

In 2020: The Sunfield SPY's announced the addition of a separate Trade's Scholarship program. This is an additional scholarship that will be awarded to an eligible graduating seniors that wish to enter a trade.  Check out the Scholarship Application/Trades Scholarship Application for more information and eligibility criteria!

We also award the Lade Military Service Honorarium for students entering the military, as well as the Richard Lenon Award that is based solely on Community Service.

The Sunfield Community Foundation announced the recipients of their 2025 Community Scholarships and Awards at the Lakewood High School Honors Night in May. Pictured are: 

Ellie Benham

Daughter of James & Maggie Benham.  She received a $5,000 scholarship.  Ellie will be attending Oakland University to study Nursing. 

Alana Cappon

Daughter of Craig & Shana Cappon.  She received a $5,000 scholarship and is this year's recipient of the Richard Lenon Community Service Award with a plaque and $500.  She will be attending Montcalm Community College pursuing a Nursing degree.

Violet Davis

Daughter of Brandon & Yvette Davis.  She received a $2,500 scholarship and a Special Recognition Award for $250.  Violet will be attending Central Michigan University to study Environmental Science.

Alaina Thomas

Daughter of Jeremiah Thomas and Casey Thomas.  She received a $2,500.  Alaina will be attending Grand Valley State University where she will take up studies in Environmental Studies.

Scarlette Shettler

Daughter of Casey & Bethany Shettler.  She received a Special Recognition Award for $250.

Pictured:  Lucas Beard, who is the son of Tim Kennedy and Missy Beard.  Lucas is going to be a Marine. And Grace Reigler of Freeport, who is the daughter of Randy & Melissa Reigler.  Grace has joined the Air Force. 

​

Two other Lakewood graduates have also enlisted but are not pictured.  One is Kerrigan Schroeder of Clarksville, who is going in the Army National Guard.  The other is Alexis Vansiclen of Lake Odessa, who enlisted in the Army.  All four graduates received the engraved “Lade Military Service Medal” as well as a $750 cash honorarium.
