Pictured (right) is Craig Cappon, President of the Sunfield Area Sponsors of Programs for Youth, presenting the SPY’s “Outstanding Achievement Award” to James Bell, which took place on Friday night under the big tent at the Farmer’s Picnic.

James was being recognized for his tireless effort in digitizing all of the past issues of the Sunfield Sentinel newspapers.  He has been working on this project since 2022.  He is placing his work in a PDF format and has put it on a flash-drives.  Thus far, he has completed well over 20 years of historical formatting.  Eventually, his work will be “word searchable”, which will make his efforts a tremendous research tool.

Parting Comments

·      Deep Thought of the Week:  Do not regret growing older.  It is a privilege denied to many.

·      Notable Quote: “I’ve seen better days, but I’ve also seen worse.  I don’t have everything that I want, but I do have all I need.  I woke up with some aches and pains, but I woke up.  My life may not be perfect, but I am blessed.”.

·      That’s Puny Department:  The other day I happened to catch this ad in a magazine I was perusing: It was an ad from a company that manufactures safes.  The ad copy read---“If your stuff is stolen, it’s not our vault.”  (Pretty clever if you ask me).

·      Did You Know Section: did you know that an Alexander Selkirk was the inspiration for the fictional character Robinson Crusoe?  Selkirk (1676 – 1721) was born in Largo, Scotland.  He became a seaman under Captain William Dampier.  In 1704, objecting to the conditions of the ship he was on, Selkirk asked to be put ashore on Mas a Tierra, a tiny desert island in the Pacific Ocean off South America.  He lived alone on this island for four years and four months before being returned to England.  A free-lance writer, Daniel Defoe, read about him, and set out to meet him.  In 1719, Defoe published a book based on Selkirk entitled “The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner”.
