S.P.Y.’s Honor Violet Davis

Pictured (left) is Craig Cappon, President of the Sunfield Area Sponsors of Programs for Youth, presenting the 2025 “Outstanding Achievement Award” to Violet Davis, daughter of Brandon & Yvette Davis of rural Sunfield. Violet is also a 2025 graduate of Lakewood High School.
The SPY’s are honoring Violet in recognition of the tremendous undertaking she accomplished during last year’s hunting season. In the fall of 2024, the State of Michigan threw all meat processors a curve that many thought would put an end to processing deer for food banks. The state demanded the processors to do something that was very time consuming and that always had been the State’s job in the past. What truly sets Violet apart is that she volunteered to head up this task. She would come in to work after school and on weekends to remove deer lymph nodes so they could be sent in and tested for chronic wasting disease. This is not an easy task and is something many grown men wouldn’t do. She had to be thorough. She had to be organized. And, she had to get it done in a timely manner. Violet took on a big responsibility and did an incredible job! Without her initiative and dedication, Hanna-Davis Fine Meats would not have been able to process and donate nearly 13,000 pounds of venison to local food banks. This was a significant example of Violet’s big heart and her commitment to helping others, that the SPY’s feel is surely deserving of this recognition.
SPY’s Sportsman’s Nigh Event Report #1
The BIG Event is just three weeks away! Preparations continue for our 30th annual Sportsman's Night Event happening on Saturday February 7th, 2026. Please make not of the following:
· Tickets are packaged and ready to go. Contact event chairman Pete Weller (517-743-1642) if interested, or for more details.
· One of the major challenges we have had over the years is finding a place that is big enough to hold the growing crowd that wants to attend this extremely popular and unique event. This year will mark the fourth different venue we have tried in the past few years in order to accommodate the turnout. So, please be advised that this year’s SPY Wild Game Dinner / Sportsmen’s Night will be held at the former Sunfield Elementary School / Caterpillar Clubhouse facility. The entire West wing of that building has been made available to us. The prize buckets will be set up in the former library and lunchroom, creating a significant ease to the congestion we have experienced in the past. The food and tables for eating will be in the gymnasium.
· Also this year we are expanding the recognition of veterans tradition that we do at the event. To that end, we need to know how many veterans are coming and if we could get their names in advance. Just give Pete a call (517-743-1642) and let him know. Thanks!

· Deep Thought of the Week: Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.
· Notable Quote: When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.
· That's Puny Department: A guy goes to the doctor. He says "Doctor I have the strangest complaint. When I fart it makes this weird noise!" The doctor says "Well can you demonstrate?" Guy says "hang on a minute ", strains slightly and this sound reverberates "hhhonda" from his bum. The doctor days "I know exactly what that is, you have an abscess on your butt" The guy exclaims "how do you know that???" The doctor replies "Didn't you know, abscess makes the fart go honda?"
· Did You Know Section: Once upon a time, long, long ago, there was a college football team that posted an undefeated 12 – 0 record---and outscored their opponents 322 to 10. During that season they beat the likes of Georgia; Auburn; Ole Miss; LSU; Texas; Texas A&M; Tennessee; Georgia Tech; Tulane; and North Carolina. Also, during their season they did something that will NEVER be accomplished again in college football. What was the name of the team? Was it Alabama; Florida; Sewanee; U of M; North Carolina; Kentucky; or Notre Dame? Give up? The answer is---Sewanee College which is located in the mountains of Tennessee. Sewanee’s 1899 season was very successful. From October 21st. through December 2nd., under the leadership of Coach Herman [Billy] Suter and future Football Hall of Famer captain Henry “Diddy” Seibels, the Sewanee team, officially the Tigers but nicknamed the "Iron Men," played and won twelve games---was unscored upon except for one game with Auburn---outscored their opponents 322 to 10---and were champions of the South. Most of their twelve opponents, including Tennessee, Louisiana State, and Texas, are among the all-time powers in US college football. The Auburn team they beat was coached by John Heisman, after whom the Heisman Trophy is named.
